An electronic recordkeeping system is an information system that is designed to meet an agency’s recordkeeping needs. At a high level, NARA has defined an electronic recordkeeping system as an electronic information system in which records are collected, organized, and categorized to facilitate their preservation, retrieval, use, and disposition. From a records perspective, an electronic recordkeeping system will ensure that the records it maintains have sufficient authenticity and reliability to meet all of an organization’s recordkeeping needs.
Once a records management system is in place, a structure exists that lets an organization know what information it has, where it is stored, and the ability to quickly get it.
